Angry Birds has been officially dethroned by Imangi’s immensely popular iPhone game, Temple Run, which now boasts 22,457,584 active players registered with Game Center.

Update: It appears that we had some bad intel. Keith Shepherd of Imangi Studios has contacted us to say: "We definitely haven't passed Angry Birds in sheer number of players." We apolgize to our readers for the confusion.

The tip comes from Twitter follower ApplePriest who was eager to share with us that “Angry Birds is no longer the most popular iPhone game! Temple Run has officially dethroned Angry Birds. It currently has more players than Angry Birds.”

As we were trying to confirm his findings, ApplePriest returned with a nifty screenshot of Game Center’s indexing system which, indeed, showed Temple Run high on top with 22,457,584 players (at the time of this writing). Angry Birds now has slightly less fans - 22,241,085 players.

“Angry Birds was released in 2009 whereas Temple Run was released in August 2011,” ApplePriest was eager to add. “What Temple Run has accomplished in such a short amount of time is quite phenomenal. I remember I last played this game a week ago and at that point in time it had 19 million players and Angry Birds even then was at 22 million.”

Thanks for the tip, Priest!

For those who aren’t very familiar with Imangi Studios’ running game, Temple Run tests your reflexes as you race down ancient temple walls and along sheer cliffs.

Players must swipe to turn, jump and slide to avoid obstacles, while collecting coins and avoiding capture. You can also buy power ups. The game never ends - you just see how far you can run every time.

The latest version of the game, released December 3rd, 2011, fixes a crash that occurred on older devices after the previous update. Temple Run is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad and requires iOS 3.0 or later.

Which of the two games do you guys play / play the most?
