Two low-level flip phones

Canadian wireless carrier Telus announced on Wednesday the release of two new mobile phones for its users, the LG 5500 and Samsung ‘Renaissance’ R540. Both of these devices have been introduced as low-end affordable devices, and they come to the market in a flip form factor.

The first flipper, the LG 5500, is a lightweight basic handset, sporting 1.76" internal display with a 176 x 220 pixel resolution and support for 262K colors, a 0.3-megapixel photo snapper with digital zoom, as well as voice dial, Bluetooth connectivity and speakerphone. In addition, it will offer support for a series of services such as email, texting and Internet browsing.

The phone measures 90.5 mm x 46.9 mm x 18.7mm and weighs 86.6 grams. Its battery can deliver up to 180 minutes of talk time and up to 150 hours of standby time. Telus has the LG 5500 available for purchase at $29.99 with a 3-year contract, but also offers it with a 2-year contract for $99.99 and with a 1-year agreement for $149.99. Contract free, the device will cost $199.99.

The second flip phone that Telus added to its offering is the Samsung ‘Renaissance’ R540, which sports a 2.1″ internal display that boasts a 240 x 320 pixel resolution and support for 262K colors and a 1″ external one, as well as exterior touch sensitive music keys, 1.3-megapixel photo snapper, Stereo Bluetooth, Speakerphone, voice dial and a microSD memory card slot that supports up to 8GB of additional storage space.

The handset also includes support for a series of services such as TELUS navigator, email, MMS and SMS, instant messaging, mobile radio, mobile music and video messaging, while also coming with Internet browsing features. The price of the device has been set at $49.99 with a 3-year contract, yet the carrier also offers it with a 2-year contract for $149.99, and with a 1-year agreement for $199.99. The full-retail price of Samsung ‘Renaissance’ R540 is of $249.99.
