Australian mobile phone carrier Telstra has just announced that it would carry the Motorola XOOM tablet PC on its airwaves starting with in May.

Unfortunately, the wireless carrier did not offer specific info on the release date or availability of the new device, but promised more info on it in the near future.

“One of the year’s most anticipated mobile tablets, the MOTOROLA XOOM, will launch on the Telstra Next G network in May. It’s great timing as Australians are now embracing both mobile tablets and devices powered by Android in record numbers,” the carrier announced.

MOTOROLA XOOM’s high-definition touch screen and powerful operating software will make it possible for more Australians to enjoy video, mobile web browsing, gaming and magazines on the go.”

The tablet PC comes to the market with a 10.1-inch widescreen HD display, and arrives in Australia as the first device in Telstra’s range to run under Google’s Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) operating platform.

The specifications list of the new device includes a 10.1-inch 1280×800 widescreen HD display, complemented by a 1GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal memory.

The Motorola XOOM also comes with a 5 megapixel rear-facing photo snapper, which can record HD (720p) videos, along with a 2-megapixel front-facing camera that supports video calling.

The specifications list of the new device also includes HDMI port, along with built-in gyroscope, barometer, e-compass, accelerometer and adaptive lighting, as well as built-in speakers for stereo sound.

The tablet PC is powered by Honeycomb, and offers support for Adobe Flash Player 10.2, so that it would deliver a rich Web experience, with support for videos, games and Internet applications.

“The XOOM brings together beautifully integrated services like Gmail, Google Maps with 3D interaction and YouTube, a world of Android apps and an interface that’s easy for owners to personalize with apps, shortcuts and widgets,” the carrier continued.
