Samsung GALAXY Tab, the first Android-based tablet PC that South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung brough to shelves during the ongoing year, has just went officially official at Telstra in Australia.

The wireless carrier was already known to plan the release of this device on its airwaves, but nothing was official on its plans for the Galaxy Tab until now.

“Today we’re introducing the Samsung GALAXY Tab – a 7-inch mobile tablet running Google’s latest operating system Android 2.2,” the wireless carrier notes in a recent blog post.

According to the company, the new device should offer a nice range of great features to its users, in addition to providing them with access to various applications and services.

“Pre-loaded apps like Kobo (for eBooks) and PressDisplay (for newspapers) make this an excellent e-reader you can take out and about with you. Customers also get a free two-month trial to The Australian newspaper’s Android app,” the wireless carrier announced.

Featuring a 7-inch touchscreen display and support for full HD1080p video playback, the device can easily prove a great multimedia solution for those who are looking for entertainment while on the go.

Moreover, the slate comes with 16GB of memory, complemented by a microSD memory card slot with support for more storage space, and with various connectivity options, including support for 3G networks, as well as WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities.

Courtesy of that Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, the Galaxy Tab can also offer support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1, for an enhanced Internet browsing experience.

As for the price tag at which the new device was made available, Ausdroid reports a $840 cost for the outright purchase. Of course, Telstra stresses on its contract options, as follows:

"The Samsung GALAXY Tab will be available to purchase on three 24-month Telstra Data+ Cap Plans, including for $0 upfront on the $49 Telstra Data+ Cap Plan with a monthly repayment option of $25, after using your MRO Bonus, for 24 months (min cost $1776) with 7GB of data to use in Australia and $10 standard national calls and SMS to any Australian."
