Steve Allison, senior vice president of publishing at Telltale Games, says that his team has talked with HBO for more than one year before they signed a final deal to create an episodic game series built around Game of Thrones.

He tells Polygon that, “We're super happy to work with them, and we'll be working on a lot of games for many years to come.”

The Game of Thrones game is designed to focus on the locations and the portrayal of the characters seen in the HBO series and the deal will allow the team to use the likeness and the voices of actors.

Telltale Games says that it wants players to feel like they are part of the universe of A Song of Ice and Fire.

The company has not yet said what kind of character gamers will become and whether the game will be a prequel to the story told by R.R. Martin or will run alongside it.

Game of Thrones will get its first episode at some point in 2014.
