While the 3G is likely not coming back, iPhone 3GS stock should fill back up

Several reports say that Telefonica Spain no longer carries Apple’s iPhone. The carrier has not limited the move to the 3G handset, but has also pulled the iPhone 3GS, a device by far not obsolete. Most bets are on depleted stock, but this should only apply to the 3GS model, with the iPhone 3G being slowly phased out around the world, ahead of the iPhone 4G launch.

MacNN informs that Telefonica has pulled both the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS from sale in Spain, the operator’s home country, citing unnamed reports. Like Softpedia, it points out to the mystery behind not pulling just the iPhone 3G, which Apple itself has stopped selling through its online store. Arguing that it’s a matter of drained stock, the report also notes that Apple is expected to introduce a new version of the phone at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 7th.

It’s not just Apple, the maker of the popular handset, that has stopped selling the iPhone 3G, but also US retailers such as Walmart. The American corporation running one of the largest chains of discount department stores now sells 16GB iPhone 3GS units for to $97, a $100 drop in price.

Needless to point out, the entire world is waiting on Apple to launch iPhone 4. Unfortunately for the company (or so it says), not one but two iPhone 4 prototype units have been leaked. Photographed, analyzed, torn down, the helpless devices have revealed all their privy secrets to several tech-publications, which, in their turn, showed pictures and videos to the whole world.

Some say Apple has lost the element of surprise this time around, yet iPhone 4 is still expected to capture the minds of smartphone lovers worldwide. When released, the device will run iPhone OS 4.0, an enhanced version of the existing software. iPhone 3GS users will also benefit from the update, which brings multitasking, Game Center, application folders, and numerous other extra features.
