14 DAY TRIAL // Over the weekend, on Saturday, a couple of teenagers in the US had to be rescued by firefighters with the Racine Fire Department after they accidentally went on a joyride across Lake Michigan atop a miniature iceberg.
The teenage boys, ages 17 and 18, were rescued and brought back to shore before either of them was in any way injured. Although chances are neither enjoyed the adventure when it happened, at least now they have a pretty cool story to share with their friends.
How the teens ended up floating on Lake Michigan
What with the freakishly low temperatures plaguing the region, Lake Michigan, together with the rest of North America's Great Lakes, is currently coated in a thick layer of ice engulfing not just its surface but also its shoreline.
While walking around the lake on Saturday around noon, the teenagers made the mistake to wander onto a chunk of ice that was resting not on land but on water. The block of ice broke off without warning and started floating on Lake Michigan, taking the young boys with it.
As shown in the photo below, the miniature iceberg carried the teenagers at a considerable distance from the shoreline. Luckily, firefighters in the city of Racine on the shore of Lake Michigan were quick to jump to their rescue.
The rescue mission was a tricky one
Daily Mail tells us that, to save the teenagers, firefighters pun on scuba gear and swam up to them. Having reached them, the firefighters asked them to put on life vests and then simply pushed the block of ice the boys were sitting on back to shore.
Information shared with the public says that, by the time their rescuers finally got to them, the teenagers had already floated at a distance of nearly 40 meters (120 feet) from the shoreline.
As soon as they made it back on land, the boys were examined by medical experts who made sure that they were both in good health before allowing them to return home to their family. Here's hoping that the next time they visit Lake Michigan the teenagers will keep their distance from the icy shoreline.
