Michael Bay will return as producer after first film proves a hit at the box office

Say what you will about Michael Bay and his lazy filmmaking style, hate on him as you will, but he’s laughing all the way to the bank. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” which he produced, opened in theaters this Friday and it’s already a certified hit at the box office.

Proof of that is to be found in the announcement from Nickelodeon Movies that a sequel is already underway. It will arrive in theaters on June 3, 2016, Deadline confirms, and will most certainly get a follow-up as well. In other words, we have a new action movie franchise on the market.

“Bay will produce alongside his Platinum Dunes partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, with Galen Walker and Scott Mednick. Screenwriters Josh Appelbaum & André Nemec (Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol) are again coming aboard to write the sequel and will also receive an exec producing credit,” the trade publication says.

The cast will return, including Megan Fox, that much is a certain bet. The only person whose involvement is still to be confirmed is director Jonathan Liebsman, but at this point, he would be a fool not to jump at the chance.

“TMNT” opened at the number 1 spot in the North American box office, but as with most Michael Bay movies, it failed to hit the right note with critics and even with many fans of the original series. A video released over the weekend, which you can also see below, highlights the similarities between it and “Transformers.”

Hint: they’re not even half as different as you might think they are.
