A man has been arrested for fatally stabbing a 16-year-old girl in Birmingham city's center, reports say.

The incident prompted a lockdown of the central area of the city today, as police followed the assailant on the streets of the British town.

According to the Independent, the victim has been identified as Christina Edkins, a student at Leasowes High School in Halesowen.

She was assaulted at 7.30 a.m. today, Thursday, March 7 as she was headed to school. The bus was about to stop in the Hagley Road station when the attack took place, the Mirror details.

Edkins had tweeted about a suspicious man on the same double-decker she was killed on.

While the tweet was dated February 8, there is no confirmation about the suspect being the same man worrying the teenager.

"This man is worrying me on the bus keeps getting up and walking up and down stairs, and sitting in different place," she wrote one month ago.

A 22-year-old man has been brought into custody in relation to the murder, following a manhunt on the streets of Birmingham by West Midlands Police. His identity has not been released to the press at this point.

"Christina was a bright and popular student much loved by staff and students alike.

"We are deeply saddened to hear this tragic news and our thoughts and hearts go out to her family and everyone who knew her.

"The school is working closely with the police and a team of counselors to provide support to our pupils and staff," Leasowes headteacher Neil Shaw says in a statement.

"There will be a high police presence across the city this afternoon following this morning’s tragedy particularly on buses and in schools in the area to provide reassurance to local people," Detective Superintendent Richard Baker adds.
