Speaks of fame, being Mexican in Hollywood and Britney Spears

While she is only 16, only few are those who still don’t know Selena Gomez’s name. A rising singer and actress who made her debut in the original Disney “Wizards of Waverly Place,” Selena is dubbed by the media as the next pop star to conquer the world. With the talent, look and great personality working in her favor, Selena has just made the cover of Latina Magazine as well.

Selena Gomez is of Mexican descent, a thing she is mostly proud of, especially since, as she says, there are not many Mexican stars in Hollywood – or, if they are, they do not get the recognition they deserve. However, it’s not just her roots that make Selena such a universally-loved star, as her sweet personality and a certain down-to-earth quality are also speaking volumes in her favor.

For starters, it has been stressed, Selena is not like other stars, in the sense that she has not allowed fame to get to her. As she herself admits, “I always wanted this to be my life but I don’t want it to live my life for me,” which means she’s not about to let her stardom define her as a person. In this respect, she explains, Britney Spears’ case can be an example to follow, since she has done pretty well for herself despite the media scrutiny and the bad things papers wrote about her.

“In a way, Britney can be someone to look up to. She was constantly being looked at and picked on, and it’s starting to happen to me. At the moment, I don’t have anything good they can pick on me with, but they’ll find something. Maybe I can be as strong.” Selena points out.

Until such a thing happens, though, the 16-year-old star is just happy to have gotten as far as she did. “I didn’t even realize what a big deal it was to be Latin at first. But then one day being with my dad, it hit me: it’s pretty neat to be Mexican. And there aren’t enough Latinas in Hollywood-or there are, but they don’t get the recognition. So to be able to come out here and use that, it’s really a powerful thing.” Selena states.
