A high-school student from California has died after a softball incident in gym class, having been struck in the chest.

Taylor Dorman was an athletic, healthy young man who played varsity football and was in good shape. He passed away on Wednesday, April 10, on his 16th birthday, Christian Post writes.

According to UPI, Dorman did not feel ill right away. He displayed no signs of distress and carried on with the game, joking around with his classmates.

20 minutes after the incident, he suddenly started complaining about chest pain and eventually collapsed. An ambulance was called in and EMTs opted to transport him to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido by helicopter.

Dorman passed just a few hours upon his admission to the hospital, and the exact cause of his death has not been made public.

Sources close to the student are telling the press that he might have suffered from a heart issue. His father apparently died as a result of a heart attack.

“After being hit Taylor complained of his chest hurting then he collapsed,” Ramona High School principal Tony Newman clarifies.

Dorman's class held a vigil to commemorate the student's birthday and untimely demise, lighting candles and blowing up “Happy Birthday” balloons.

“We had planned our lives together. We were going to play football for another two years and then join the military. […] Now that’s all gone,” his friend Chris Hartness expresses.

“He was always happy and always smiling. And even when it was a bad day he would always bring just so much happiness,” another student adds.
