ACCESS, the company behind the Garnet OS (formerly known as Palm OS) and the ACCESS Linux Platform, announced the release of a technical preview of the next version of its NetFront Browser for Windows Mobile. The 3.4 version is compatible with Pocket PCs running Windows Mobile 5.0, and although the producer didn't mention anything about support for Windows Mobile 6, it is expected that the full release will be compatible with the latest version of Microsoft's operating system.

The new release of NetFront brings improved security features, adding Camellia - a high-security, high-performance international standard cipher jointly developed by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) and Mitsubishi Electric Corp - alongside the Advanced Encryption Standard, a U.S. government block cipher encryption algorithm. By providing support for both Camellia and AES, the latest technical preview version of NetFront Browser for Windows Mobile provides even greater security to mobile Internet users.

Other improvements of this release include faster rendering speed; PagePilot - which gives a bird's eye view of the page and allows users to select the part they want to view (the feature is not available for devices that do not have a cursor button/navigation pad); and Visual Bookmarks which, as the name implies, show thumbnails of bookmarked pages to makes it easy for users to find the page they are looking for. You can view in the pictures how the new PagePilot and Visual Bookmarks features look like.

NetFront Browser v3.4 for Windows Mobile was developed based on standard Internet protocols and supports the following markup languages: HTML (HyperText Markup Language), XHTML (eXtensible HyperText Markup Language), and WAP2.0 (WML1.3). Also, it can display pages to which CSS (Cascading Style Sheet), ECMAScript (JavaScript), DOM (Document Object Model), or DHTML (Dynamic HTML) have been applied.

The technical preview version of NetFront Browser v3.4 for Windows Mobile is available in both English and Japanese versions. A trial version (which expires on February 29, 2008) can be downloaded right here.
