Developers call for Microsoft to keep TechNet alive

Microsoft has recently announced that it would no longer renew any TechNet subscription after August 31, so developers around the world joined forces for a petition supposed to convince the tech giant to keep the service alive.

The company yesterday announced that TechNet and MSDN subscribers would only get Windows 8.1 RTM on October 18, the same date when all users are expected to receive the OS update.

As a result, developers rushed to the petition site to submit their signature and hope for a change of mind from Redmond.

“IT Professionals and ISVs need affordable access to Microsoft products normally accessed through TechNet. Please continue TechNet or create an affordable alternative to MSDN subscriptions minus Visual Studio and associated developer tools. Currently, the only comparable MSDN subscription costs $6120,” the petition reads.

Unsurprisingly, many developers have been angered by Microsoft’s decision to lock down Windows 8.1, especially because they all need more time to tweak apps and prepare software for the big launch of the OS.
