Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will offer both depth and accessibility when it launches later during the year, making sure that gamers have new options when it comes to the multiplayer experience, but that they also find a lot of familiar features.

Mark Lamia, who leads the development team at Treyarch, has told CVG that, “Multiplayer is the lifeblood of the franchise. Call of Duty multiplayer is played 365 days a year, twenty-four seven, all over the world. But we can do better.”

The developer believes that the first Black Ops was a good game which offered players a lot of options, but it failed to innovate in significant ways on the core mechanics of the franchise.

Lamia sees the key to success for Call of Duty as being linked to a solid balance between the innovation included in each new release and a fidelity to the core elements of the game.

Lamia added, “I think you have to keep the game accessible but have that depth. I think it will take players awhile to peel back the layers on this one because there’s a lot of stuff going on underneath, there’s all kinds of different ways to play now. If you want to survive you’re going to have to play the objectives and play with your team.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 innovates when it comes to the single-player segment of the game by including missions where player choice actually matters, which can influence the end-game.

In the multiplayer area, the game will introduce a new Create-a-Class feature that allows any player to pick and choose his favorite items, weapons and skills and then use them in battle.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will be available on November 13 on the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.
