14 DAY TRIAL // Taylor Swift is ripping a page out of Beyonce’s manual on making a spectacular entrance / hitting the highest note with a music release, and she’s dropped a brand new song on iTunes, as part of a preview of her new album “1989,” which doesn’t come out until later this month.
“Out of the Woods” is now available on iTunes in full, one full week ahead of the official album release. This is the second release from “1989,” after the cheerful anti-haters anthem “Shake It Off.”
However, unlike anything Taylor has ever put out, it’s got a very distinctive sound. You can stream “Out of the Woods” in full below.
New song is a treat for fans, not a single
Even though “Out of the Woods” is officially out, it won’t be getting the single treatment, Taylor explains. This release is more like a treat to her millions of loyal fans, who, at the same time, will get a fresh sample of the kind of music they’re to expect from her new album.
“1989,” we should note, is Taylor’s first non-country music album, a material that’s inspired by her personal life experiences and her favorite tracks from the ‘90s, as she was growing up. In other words, we should totally expect a new sound.
Because “Out of the Woods” isn’t getting a single release, Taylor will probably not be promoting it, as neither will she be shooting a music video for it. Its entire life span will be limited to the online realm.
Fret not, though: as we speak, the song has proved to be quite a hit, even though not entirely to fans’ liking. In fact, some industry analysts are rushing to call Taylor’s iTunes release a stroke of “genius.”
So, who is this song about? Harry Styles, no doubt.
Taylor Swift writes very personal music, inspired by her own life experience. She never made a secret of that, even though she’s always been fiercely protective of the identity of the guys she supposedly writes about.
Because she was, until not long ago, a tabloid fixture for her bad luck in love, with this release, the conversation steers again towards speculation on the identity of the guy she’s singing about. Not that there’s any concrete proof to back it up, but the Internet seems to have decided that she could only be singing about One Direction hottie Harry Styles, whom she dated for a few months in late 2012.
It’s that part in the song about the snowmobile accident that seems to have convinced most fans that the boy is Styles. Taylor, for one, is keeping mum on that.
“Out of the Woods” is about capturing a feeling
She will say this, though: the song is about capturing a certain feeling. So what if we focused on that for a change?
In a video posted to her YouTube channel before the song was released on iTunes, Taylor explains the new sound by saying it was what best described her emotions during a particular romance.
“This was a relationship where it was kind of living day to day, wondering where it was going, and if it was gonna go anywhere, if it was going to end the next day,” she says, as you can see in the video below.
“It was a relationship where you kind of felt you were never standing on solid ground. And that kind of a feeling brings on excitement, but also extreme anxiety, and kind of a frantic feeling of wondering,” she adds.
