Tanzania is reviewing its information and communication technology (ICT) policy of 2003. Officials want to improve it in an effort to enhance the country’s capabilities when it comes to dealing with cyber threats and cyber criminals.

According to Tanzania’s Daily News, Professor Patrick Makungu, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology, has stressed that authorities need to find a way to stay ahead of existing and new cyber threats.

“Steps must be taken to improve our capacity to deal with cyber threats and cyber criminals or else they will cause irreparable damage to economies and countries,” Makungu noted at the 7Th Southern African Telecommunications Union workshop on fraud management, revenue assurance and cyber security.

Dr. Kamugisha Kazaura, the CEO of the Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL), has noted that telecoms operators from the region must work together on combating network fraud.
