Samsung has filed a patent for a new smartwatch product

This weekend a new report confirmed what has been already speculated for a while now: Samsung is working on a stand-alone smartwatch that will allow users to place phone calls without the need of a smartphone.

Samsung’s current Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches have the disadvantage of having to be used in tandem with a smartphone. But Sammy’s next wearable time-piece might be a game changer for the developing smartwatch market.

Samsung is also expected to introduce an Android Wear watch by the end of the year, and if you were curious to see what this device might look like, we can provide you with the first glimpse into that.

As you might as well know, Motorola is one of the first companies to release an Android Wear smartwatch. The device has already been leaked online a number of times and shows the beautiful stylish design we wish all smartwatches would bring to the table.

And now it appears Samsung will be following in Motorola’s footsteps with its new smartwatch iteration. The company’s latest patent filing showcases a wearable timepiece very reminiscent of the design of the Moto 360, reports Talk Android.

It appears customer feedback complaining about the look of the Galaxy Gear or Gear 2 Neo has paid off and Samsung is getting ready to give the more traditional look a shot.

Another interesting aspect is how future users will be interacting with the watch. Samsung plans to put aside the standard touch-screen interaction and to take up finger-gestures.

So when you want to have something done on your smartwatch, you’ll have to hoover over it or in front of it.

Therefore, the device will arrive bundled with a camera/sensor of sorts that will keep track of gestures in order to bring about the respective features.

The patent goes on to talk about the smartwatch being paired to a device like a smartphone or a tablet, so as we have suspected, this can’t be the standalone wearable time-keeper, but most likely Sammy’s Android Wear device.

Google has already stated very clearly that Android Wear should be kept for notifications and not stand alone applications.

Anyway, this is just speculation at this point and the smartwatch might as well end up running Tizen OS, for all we know.

However, keep in mind that this is just a patent and it does not necessarily mean we’re actually going to see the device making it into real life.
