CTBC Bank (formerly known as Chinatrust Commercial Bank), one of largest private financial institutions in Taiwan, has been fined NT$4 million ($134,000 / €100,000) for inadvertently leaking the personal details of 33,000 online banking customers.

Normally, only CTBC staff should be able to view the confidential information but, because of the error, any Internet user could have accessed it, Focus Taiwan reports.

The incident occurred sometime in May, but it’s uncertain for how many days the information was available.

The Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) is displeased with the fact that the financial institution has failed to implement a system that would alert it in such situations.

CTBC became aware of the issue only after customers started complaining about receiving unsolicited calls from marketing companies.

Impacted individuals have been notified by the bank and new security measures have been implemented after the incident.
