In an effort to raise awareness of cyber threats and information security, Taiwan’s National Center for High-Performance Computing (NCHC) has launched what it calls the world’s first free, public malware database.

According to Focus Taiwan, the repository includes information on some 200,000 pieces of malware. It also provides instructions on how to remove around 3,000 malicious elements from computers.

The malware knowledge base harvests information with the aid of 6,000 IP addresses that monitor the Web for cyberattacks.

The new service is available not only for businesses, academics, but also for regular Internet users. To sign up for the malware knowledge database, users must complete an online application.

NCHC began working on the system back in 2010 when it teamed up with the Ministry of Education and a total of 20 universities.

Taiwan is said to be hit by around 3.4 million cyberattacks each day.
