Children are irreversibly drawn to tablets and their parents are happy to oblige

Remember how CNET did a poll not so long ago, asking its readers what they were going to shop for this holiday season? Unsurprisingly, almost half of the participants claimed they would be grabbing a tablet.

But how about children, since they are the traditional recipients of gifts during Christmas? This won’t surprise you a bit, but according to a new survey conducted by uSwitch, a whopping 80% of British parents will be spending an average of £243 / $397 / €292 on tech gifts. 16% will go even further and spend £400 / $653 / €480 or more on kiddie tech.

What's the gadget little angels crave for? You guessed it, it’s tablets! 24% of parents involved in the research are going to buy a slate to make their child happy this holiday season.

Only 17% of parents are going to be adding Games to their to-buy lists, while smartphones only attract 13% of votes. E-readers made it to the list too, showing that some parents (11%) would still like to encourage their kids to read more.

Luckily enough with the advent of cheaper Android tablets, parents have less costly options to consider and won’t have to go on a limb to provide the perfect winter gift for their little ones.

Telecom Expert for uSwitch Ernet Doku issued a few tips for gift shopping.

“Any parent worried about keeping the cost of Christmas gifts down should make sure they get the best deal, and perhaps think outside the big names. Many of the bargain priced smartphones and tablets are actually still relatively high spec.”

“Some Christmas lists may seem unreasonable and make for expensive reading, but little bit of savvy shopping could help parents enjoy a peaceful Christmas – as well as a debt-free New Year.”

With Black Friday being under way, we’re pretty sure parents can scoop out some pretty nifty offers. Some pre-Christmas shopping could certainly prove to be advantageous.
