Dungeons & Dragons geeks rejoice as TabletTop Interactive, an Australian company focusing on mobile games, has just kicked off its Kickstarter campaign for PlaneQuest.

PlaneQuest is aimed at Android, iOS tablets, as well as Windows 8 and Windows RT, once they are supported by Unity 3D.

The game gives players the possibility to mix the flavors of a miniature tabletop game with their tablets. It offers both worlds by connecting miniatures board game with video games played on mobile devices.

Developers of the game have already created a prototype called PlaneQuest: Champions, which will be turned into a full game if the Kickstarter campaign is successful.

PlaneQuest will be the game that will define a new genre called TabletTop Gaming, which bridges the physical and digital worlds.

Basically, players will be able to control their hero by moving a physical miniature over the tablet’s screen.

According to developers, “our TabletTop Miniatures feel like they're part of the digital game environment. The figurine you're holding appears to cast realistic shadows, as if it's standing in the same digital game world as the enemies.”

The first game in the PlaneQuest series has a pretty interesting story background. It appears that all the Planes of existence are under threat, as Dark Archons, or Darkons, have managed to overthrow the Archons that ruled the High Plane.

With Celestial Keeps across the multiverse now occupied by the Dark Archons, it’s all up to the lower Planes to free the Archons and the High Plane.

The miniatures that come with the game are champions assembled by these lower Planes in an attempt to overthrow the Dark Archons.

The initial game will be available along with 5 miniatures: The Draken, The Archon, The Sauren, The Sentinel and The Tigron.

The folks at TabletTop Interactive will release PlaneQuest in December 2013 if at least £150,000 / €175,000 / $228,500 are pledged via Kickstarter. More details on the project are available here.

UPDATE: We've been informed by TabletTop Interactive that the miniatures and the game itself are not slated for delivery till May 2014. Obviously, this is no reason not to pledge.
