Video game developer THQ has confirmed that layoffs have hit its Australian office and there are rumors that the division based in Japan might also be affected.

An official statement says, “THQ confirms a reduction in force to the company’s administration and publishing organization.”

It adds, “As recently announced, the company is exiting the kids’ licensed games category, and is focusing on its core game franchises and developing its digital initiatives. The streamlined organization reflects the company’s new strategy. THQ’s five internal studios were not affected by this action.”

THQ has recently stated that it will focusing on its core franchises, including Saints Row, Warhammer 40,000, Company of Heroes and UFC Undisputed.

The decision was made public after a rumor suggested that the company canceled all games beyond 2013 and was prepared to be acquired by another entity.

It is not clear whether the new direction for THQ will mean that more employees will lose their jobs in the near future.
