The week-long Team Fortress 2 War update is finally over and, with an official death toll in, it looks like, in the end, nothing could make the Demoman burst into the lead. But there's no surprise there, since the master of war can be no one else than the Soldier and, while he had fierce competition, he proved that the battlefield was, without a doubt, his home. As an end-result, Valve and Mann Co. have a pair of brand-new, special items available for the Soldier, the Gunboats.

“No advancement has been made in the escalation sciences since… until now. Introducing the Gunboats, secondary-slot boots that reduce rocket jump damage by a huge amount, rendering stairs forever useless. What is the science behind these miracles of technology? Magic, probably.”

The end of the War has also made the update become official, so that means a few more things have been implemented into the game. Two new maps have been added, a Control Point and Capture the Flag one. “Cp_gorge is an attack/defense map with only two control points, designed for quick rounds and fast, frantic play. It has more lateral game space than previous Control Point maps, allowing for more maneuvering options.”

As for the second one, Valve states that, “Doublecross is a fast-paced map that promises a lot of turnaround, with fighting focused on the main bridge and plenty of ways to fall off of it (or cause others to). The secondary train bridge below is perfect for sneakier classes, and provides a number of secret tunnels.” Also part of the end of War, Team Fortress 2 has earned a free weekend, allowing everybody a taste of the improvements made to the game. And, if the freebie has gotten you hooked, Valve has even more incentive for you to purchase the title, as, for a limited time, it is up for grabs for only half the cost.
