Despite having essentially led the industry, it is quitting

TDK was, and actually still is, one of the main promoters of Blu-ray disk technologies, but it might not hold that position for much longer.

The company has begun a process of restructuring, in order to improve its financial situation and avoid a potential fall from which it would not be able to recover.

If nothing else, Kodak showed the world what happens when you're too attached to something.

Anyway, TDK wants to focus on passive components, like heads for HDDs and rechargeable batteries.

Thus, it will sell its optical disk manufacturing business or just shut it down, possibly firing a bunch of people in the process.

The full withdrawal from the Blu-ray industry should be complete by the time March 2014 rolls around.

We imagine that TDK will spend some time looking for buyers, then shut down the division if it doesn't find any.
