Though it could have made a normal speaker, TDK already has a bunch of those on sale, so this new one, and we use that term loosely, is more than meets the eye, or ear as the case may be.
We say that we use “new” loosely because the product was actually present at IFA 2012.
It hasn't started shipping yet though. That will reportedly
only happen next month (October 2012), for the price of $250 / 192-250 Euro.
Indeed, the audio output device really is that expensive, and its name should explain why: Wireless Weatherproof Speaker.
Being IP64-certified, the newcomer may not exactly be safe when submerged underwater completely, but it should shrug off any dousing, accidental or otherwise. Rain, likewise, should be no problem.
TDK chose Bluetooth for the wireless connection and included a rechargeable battery in the specifications (six hours on a single charge).
