TDK, one of the leaders in optical discs manufacturing, recently announced, during the 8th Annual Data Storage Expo in Japan, that it intends to ship its latest development -the Blu-ray media rated at 6x - at the end of the current year, as it has also showcased the new 25GB Blu-ray disc, which delivers three times the current media speed, informs Daily Tech.
Unfortunately, TDK's innovation will not be able to run on anything but a finger, as the manufacturers intend to release 6x media compliant drivers theoretically in early 2007, but it just might happen to be shipped next summer.
"TDK was also showing off 100GB Blu-ray media which we reported on back in April. The 100GB media uses a 4-layer process which has spacer layers between. TDK's latest trend graph shows a maximum speed of 4x for 100GB media," comments Daily Tech.
TDK representatives talked again about the company's 200GB Blu-ray disc (BD), the world's highest optical disc capacity, a media released in early May.
In order to come out with this innovation, TDK has increased the capacity of all six disc layers by 32%, the layers having 33GB apiece, from the initial 25GB capability. Moreover, the disc is, in fact, an 8-layer media on a single side.
Apparently, the war featuring HD DVD standard and Blu-ray media was won by the latter, as it is almost impossible to increase HD DVD layers capacity from 50 GB to more than 200 GB using new media materials.
