Blu-ray optical drives might not be compatible with the new disc

TDK, one of the leaders in optical discs manufacturing, has presented all the details regarding its latest 200GB Blu-ray disc (BD), the world's highest optical disc capacity.

It seems that TDK has increased the capacity of all six disc layers by 32%, the layers having 33GB apiece, from the initial 25GB capability.

Apparently, the war featuring HD DVD standard and Blu-ray media was won by the latter, as it is almost impossible to increase HD DVD layers capacity from 50 GB to more than 200 GB using new media materials.

But we can't say the same thing regarding Blu-ray discs, as TDK's new complex manufacturing system still dazzles the minds of many IT specialists.

But this system will be blamed if it will be demonstrated that no Blu-ray optical drive can be compatible with the disc. It seems that, when the laser heats this type of medium, it oxidizes to form bubbles of air, which affect the laser light in much the same way as pits on traditional CD and DVD media.
