The new technology developed by T-Mobile will allow cellphones to transfer calls between cell networks and Wi-Fi routers with no interruption at all. This can come handy if you want to cut down costs of your phone conversations, because, for example, when arriving home and being in the middle of an important talk, the handset will detect the wireless connection available through the
Wi-Fi router, and will transfer you instantly to the wireless
Internet signal, transforming the previous cell network phone call in a
VoIP conversation that has half the costs or even less.
Robert Dotson, chief executive of the US subsidiary of
Deutsche Telekom AG, has said that "we believe we're in a place where we can take it to a full market trial. If the battery life is not close to a cordless phone that exists in the home today, they're not going to use it. Even the call quality can't change. We're ensuring the setup and usage totally seamless".
The UMA technology seems to be the next step in the development of the American carrier, and things seem to be going on the right path, helping us to get rid of all these communication devices that surround us everywhere we go.
I have a dream. I dream that my future four children will one day live in a world where they will have to own a single phone that will be an oasis of telecommunication and connectivity with all their friends and all the members of their family. In a world were there will be no home lands or cell networks and all you will need will be a device that will connect you to everybody and everything through a free and high-speed Wi-Fi connection. Or, at least, something like this.
