The Galaxy S5 wasn’t charging, it was just sitting there

Stories about mobile phones catching on fire out of the blue, or even worse, exploding, have become pretty common these days, as more and more people purchase and actively use such devices.

Samsung, for one, hasn't been a stranger to allegations that its phones aren't particularly safe. Well, the latest fire hazard story involving a Samsung phone was posted by a Reddit user going by the name Jjhend.

He claims that while he was out getting some groceries, he left his Galaxy S5 smartphone on a desk as he took care of his business. The phone was not charging or anything and was just sitting there quietly on the table.

Owner of Galaxy S5 claims his phone caught fire for no apparent good reason

When he came back, he was surprised to find that the house smelled of electrical fire. The strange smell led him to the room where he left his Galaxy S5 to find the phone on the desk smoking.

In his panicked state, Jjhend poured a glass of water over the battery. However, this is a big mistake when faced with a burning lithium-ion battery. Baking soda or a class D type fire extinguisher are usually the best ways to handle the situation.

The user apparently still owes $400 / €362 of hard cash to T-Mobile for the phone that has now been rendered quite useless.

Once again, the Galaxy S5 owner claims the phone was not charging nor did it have a third-party battery on the inside.

When asked if the phone was standing in direct sunshine (a commenter found that his Note 2 gets really hot quite fast if sun hits it for any length of time), Jjhend replied that the blinds were closed and the room where the Galaxy S5 was sitting was actually quite cold.

The phone did not have a warranty and Jijhend does not mention whether he has contacted T-Mobile or Samsung to inform them of the matter.

A few months ago, we also told you a similar story about a Galaxy S4 device that caught on fire while charging. In that case, the owner claimed the charger was the original one and the battery was also of the official kind, purchased from a Vodafone shop in order to replace the so-called “ballooned original.”
