The rumored G2 update that could bring users two important features, Wi-Fi calling and tethering, is expected to be rolled out today. This information leaked recently, hinting that the update will be pushed to T-Mobile G2 devices starting November 3rd and will continue until November 8th.
According to an internal T-Mobile document shown by
TmoNews, the update will be sent OTA (over the air) and will include the new Wi-Fi calling for Android features.
Rumored two weeks ago, when a couple of G2 users reported that they have received it OTA as part of a trial, the software update was denied by the carrier at that time.
However, T-Mobile announced its new
Tethering and Wi-Fi Sharing plans on Monday and is expecting to debut the new services starting today.
The Tethering and Wi-Fi Sharing Add-On will have a monthly cost of $14.99 and will allow T-mobile customers to use their phone as a modem, enabling them to connect a computer or Wi-Fi capable device to the Web using the carrier's 3G or HSPA+ network.
Besides the monthly costs, the add-on features require users to own a 3G or HSPA+ compatible device, as well as an Unlimited Web feature with an MRC of $19.95 or higher.
It's odd, but the internal memo contains guidelines for reps that are advised not to proactively discuss the new features with customers because, apparently
T-Mobile does not have a tethering plan available yet.
In case users discover the said features after they receive and install the update and ask about it reps are advised to respond with an “
approved” message, which is exactly the same used by the carrier when it denied the existence of the software update.
“
Wi-Fi Calling and tethering/Wi-Fi sharing are not currently supported on the T-Mobile G2. T-Mobile knows these features are important to consumers and we’re working to deliver them to G2 users in the future. We have nothing further to announce at this time.”
