Lately, T-Mobile has been doing a lot of work on its 3G network, and it now seems to be right on schedule, expanding it even further. On September 18, T-Mobile announced the network expansion plans, which included the deployment of its third-generation (3G) wireless broadband service to 27 major markets in the United States by the end of 2008.

Cole Brodman, chief development officer, T-Mobile USA, said at that time, “With the faster data speeds delivered by our 3G network, T-Mobile looks forward to offering mobile products and services that place the full power of the Web in our customers’ hands.”

Last week, the mobile carrier launched the 3G network in Sacramento California, thus bringing the number of major cities served by 3G coverage to 92. This week, the company will continue the extension in the communities in and around Memphis and Tampa.

“We’re excited about the broad scale and reach of our 3G footprint in major cities across the nation, already accessible by tens of millions of consumers. And today, where the majority of our customers use data services, our 3G network is there for them,“ Senior Vice President of Engineering and Operations, T-Mobile USA, Neville Ray, said. “Our 3G footprint will continue to expand, and we look forward to continuing to deliver the rich experiences a 3G network can bring to T-Mobile customers.”

T-Mobile's UMTS/ HSDPA (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System/ High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) data network now supports multiple 3G-capable phones available from T-Mobile, including the upcoming G1. The 3G data network will deliver users speeds up to 1Mbps, thus allowing them to take full advantage of all the new applications and services that are developed for T-Mobile's G1.

It clearly seems that the company sees its G1 as a major money maker, and so it should, considering that it has already pre-sold over 1.5 million units of it. Certainly, there is no room for errors or unhappy customers here.
