If you’re a fan of Samsung phones, or if you like to text a lot, then T-Mobile has a new toy especially for you, coming on November 17. Moreover, the upcoming device is expected to have an acceptable price.
The Samsung Gravity t450 is a slide-out phone that provides users with all the basic functions and a little something on the side – and it does all this in a peculiar design. While, at first glance, the Gravity could be somewhat easily mistaken for a low-budget Samsung, the surprise comes in that it comes with a full QWERTY slide-out keyboard for easy typing. Actually, the phone is described as a user-friendly messaging device that will allow customers to stay constantly and easily connected with their friends all day long. The peculiar device features a 1.3MP camera with video recording capabilities, stereo Bluetooth connectivity, GPRS and EDGE, an expandable memory microSD card slot and USB interface. It also offers users instant messaging, email access, mobile backup, music player, voice notes, and sync with PC capabilities. The colors options in which the phone is available are lime with gray, and aqua with white.
So, one of the things most striking about this device is its looks. When you usually think Samsung, you think nice design and style, but it seems that lately, it keeps delivering devices that are, well, simply weird looking. Take the Samsung Milky for instance, which looks like a huge pill, while the Gravity sends certain vibes of a cheap piece of plastic. Clearly, low-budget phones will never have the same design as high-end ones, and it's only understandable that they don't – still, users expect at least a minimum consideration towards aesthetics. There is a Latin saying, "de gustibus non est disputandum" that might apply here. Indeed, in this case, there should be no arguing about tastes. One thing that is to be expected with this phone is a low price, perhaps even the possibility of getting it free with a subscription, but in order to see that, we'll have to wait until November 17.

| Comment #1 by: elizabeth on 30 Nov 2008, 07:11 UTC | reply to this comment | I am a huge fan of samsung phones. I just got the gravity last night and I absolutely love it!! The white/aqua color is just gorgeous. It was so easy to get used to using. And the slider keyboard is nice to have since I text so often! The screen is kinda small, but the phone itself is pretty compact. I really have no complaints! |
| Comment #2 by: Cocoa on 30 Dec 2008, 08:19 UTC | reply to this comment | ok...
i got the aqua/white version like 2 days ago and i'm feelin it! i was kinda iffy at first because i usually like bigger phones with bigger screens and things like that, but the phoneis not bad. the screen isnt TOO small, nor is the phone. its actually a really good size. i love almost everything about the phone! especially the keyboard and the appearence. its a VERY sturdy phone, which i also like.
what i dnt like is that i cant set music tones to be for my text messages, or how i cant turn off the shudder sound for the camera. but those are little things.
Also, ive seen other reviews on the battery of this phone.
The battery is not too bad, but i will say that it wont last u a full day without having to be charged. But its nothing u cant work with though.
Overall, this phone is hot!! and cute!! (aqua) lol |
| Comment #3 by: hmm on 02 Jan 2009, 03:31 UTC | reply to this comment | I like the phone, its great for texting, its my first time using a keyboard
It is easy to use
What i dont like is that i can not set a tone for my message
the camera isnt to clear
and the battery life is not too good... but it does last a while on the last bar lol
overall its a good phone just those few things i do not like.. i like my phone to be charged and the battery is just not doing it for me but other than that im happy with it |
| Comment #3.1 by: sunshine on 24 Apr 2009, 14:43 GMT | We just got 2 new gravity from T-Mobile and it won't hold the charge...here is why I don't think it's the battery: we have a samsung t429 phone and I happen to use the charger from that phone on my gravity t459 and what do you know it charged the phone and is holding the charge for days. I notify Samsung and told them about this discovery!!!
Since I do have a 14 day warranty with T-mobile they are replacing the phone but until Samsung recitify this charger problem I think everyone with a gravity will continue to have a poor charge. |
| Comment #4 by: Aqua Gravity!! on 11 Jan 2009, 14:52 UTC | reply to this comment | I am actually about to get this phone. I heard that the battery life sucks though and that many people have returned theirs or they just recharge it every couple of hours which I cant do at school. So can someone please tell me is the battery life really that bad? Because I text lyke 24/7 |
| Comment #4.1 by: christie on 20 Jan 2009, 22:49 GMT | the battery life is not that bad, as long as the phone is on all the time. turning the power on and off takes a lot of juice, but with the backlight on a short setting the battery lasts me about 2 days without turning off the power. sidekicks are much worse, and in my opinion this phone beats them by a longshot! i love mine. :) |
| Comment #5 by: BR on 16 Jan 2009, 21:49 UTC | reply to this comment | I got the Gravity yesterday, and it is a GREAT phone. I recommend it to all T-Mobile users! |
| Comment #6 by: Emily on 16 Feb 2009, 00:07 UTC | reply to this comment | This phone sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is a great design and it is easy to use but the battery life sucks! I charge it all night and within an hour it turns off because the battery is dead. I will be in the middle of texting my friends and it will randomly just turn off. I have to charge it 10 times a day and even that is NOT enough. I love this phone but the battery quality is a pain. I love the idea of a full key board but this phone is a dissappointment. :o( |
| Comment #6.1 by: melina on 15 Feb 2010, 23:53 GMT | over charging it deterierates the battery. |
| Comment #6.2 by: shannon on 24 Apr 2010, 13:39 GMT | my phone does this too, but i switched to my old blackberry, and i wanted my white phone back, it works just fine, but ill charge it and it says fully charged, and when i take it off the charger it says it is almost dead, then i can only use it for like five minutes and its dead. :( |
| Comment #7 by: Kyle on 16 Feb 2009, 19:07 UTC | reply to this comment | I also know a way to " train " the battery to run longer. You let the battery completly die, like the phone shutting off on its own, then you charge it for like 5 hours [ off ] without touching it, repeat this many times as needed, and the battery life will get alot better. |
| Comment #8 by: mS. Confused on 07 Mar 2009, 20:20 UTC | reply to this comment | I just go the phone, it's a bit on the heavy side and u need small fingers for to text or long thumb nails, i use my thumb nails. I ran into a problem when trying to text, it is asking for some center number, I have no clue what this number is and it seems tech support have no idea either. Not a bad phone but it is new to my service provider they need to be more knowledge in the tech support before they released this phone. Not bad, if you are looking just to text this is the phone. |
| Comment #8.1 by: tracy on 29 Mar 2009, 18:33 GMT | did you find out how to fix the problem of the " enter center" message when trying to text? i am having the same problem. |
| Comment #8.2 by: Pete on 12 Apr 2009, 19:09 GMT | To solve this problem (enter center), you'll have to call your service provider and get the phone number to the text message center. With new phones, they might not be able to update it remotely. I had to take the SIM card out and place it in an older phone to manually enter the Text Message Center number. |
| Comment #9 by: Jessica on 15 Mar 2009, 16:38 UTC | reply to this comment | Ok, so i am looking for a new phone, cause mine is the sucky samsung sph-m300. and it's kind of dieing on me. How much does this phone exactly cost in canada?? it looks really nice and i'm use to a sucky battery seeing as that is what mine does already haha. It sounds like a really great phone!!!! |
| Comment #10 by: bella on 15 Mar 2009, 16:57 UTC | reply to this comment | to be quite honest with you i think this phone is amazing there's only one bad thing i most honestly say, the phone only lasted for me like three hours while it was charged. my favorite part about this phone is the TEXTING!!!!! |
| Comment #11 by: thomas on 17 Mar 2009, 03:52 UTC | reply to this comment | I think the foan is cool but the battery life is too short it shut off so qiuck when I talk on aim and stuff |
| Comment #12 by: Rick on 30 Mar 2009, 22:19 UTC | reply to this comment | The battery will drain fast, But I like the phone |
| Comment #13 by: Alayna on 01 Apr 2009, 21:02 UTC | reply to this comment | I got this phone 3 months ago. I used to love this phone, but for the past week the batterey will be completely charged and the phone still randomly shuts off for no reason. My friend has the same problem and he got his the same time i got mine. I wouldn't suggest this phone. |
| Comment #14 by: mike on 26 Apr 2009, 04:08 UTC | reply to this comment | i have the gravity for like a month now and the only problem i have with it is it randomly turns of by itsself and its not the battery becous i have full bars when it happens but other then that it a nice phone |
| Comment #15 by: Chris on 06 May 2009, 14:34 UTC | reply to this comment | ok had this phone for 5 months and 3 days ago it started shutting off when you slide it shut. I am guessing this is an engineering issue. There is a ribbon cable inside the slide that clearly has a loose connection. I am ok with getting a replacement phone every year or so but I would NOT reccommend this phone unless you get a no-frills warranty.
;(( |
| Comment #16 by: ashley on 28 May 2009, 02:49 UTC | reply to this comment | this fone roxs !! i just got it a couple hours ago but the batterie lifi sucks and wen i send a message it makes a noice to say that it sent but idk how to turn that off so i wont get in trouble at skool.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| Comment #16.1 by: Bigboy on 18 Jul 2009, 14:57 GMT | Guessing by some of the posts from the people on this board, you should really be turning your phones(not foan, fone, orany other messed up spelling of a rather simple word) off while in class. Yes, the batteries suck. |
| Comment #17 by: alex on 21 Jun 2009, 02:57 UTC | reply to this comment | Well, I have had this phone for eight months. What I don't like about it is, for some reason when I receive messages- It says I've got them 4 hours ago, or 5. |
| Comment #18 by: dannyboy on 15 Jul 2009, 03:58 UTC | reply to this comment | ok the battery life is actually not that bad!!! i got it and it rocks! the design is great and it is really easy to text. kool features too. 4/5! |
| Comment #19 by: carlee on 23 Jul 2009, 04:46 UTC | reply to this comment | does anyone know how to turn the sound off when taking a picture? i've gone through the camera settings and it shows the option of shutter sound but won't let me go to it. |
| Comment #20 by: emmybear on 10 Aug 2009, 20:48 UTC | reply to this comment | I am helping a friend find a phone that suits her. Would you recommend this phone? Or should she not waste her time or money? |

| Comment #22 by: stacy on 12 Sep 2009, 14:03 UTC | reply to this comment | i have had my phone replaced 2 other times and keeps shutting off on its own usually its just after sliding open and close the phone. Very frustrating. |
| Comment #23 by: Jana on 04 Oct 2009, 10:37 UTC | reply to this comment | I purchased this phone from Best Buy as my back-up, pay as you go phone in June, this year. I have not experienced any battery or charger/charging issues. My handset charges just fine and the battery lasts for 2-3 days, depending on my usage. If I take lots of pictures or listen to music for lengthy sessions it drains rapidly, as expected in comparison to other cell phones.
Pictures are not as bad as some say with this 1.3mp camera. You need to set the resolution to the best quality, adjust the EF (brightness) as needed and use good lighting. Granted, the camera is not the best there is but for this type pf phone, seems about par and better than others in this entry level. I have taken very satisfactory shots when I take the time to make them right.
My big gripe with this phone is the speaker sound... IMO, this is a fantastic 'texting' phone but it falls a little short in call sound quality directly from the handset. I find the I must use the wired headset or a bluetooth to hear and be heard. The call volume sounds too low even at the highest setting and the phone picks up a lot of background noises when on speakerphone, especially when driving. If you are sitting in a quiet spot, the speakerphone and call sound are normal, but only then.
I purchased this phone from Best Buy as my back-up, pay as you go phone in June, this year. I now use this handset as my daily phone. I have not experienced any battery or charger/charging issues. My handset charges just fine and the battery will last for 2-3 days depending on my personal usage. I always use my phone alarm (daily). I keep the screen set to the longest and brightest and I text and picture message daily - as much as 30 per day, but only make 4-6 daily phone calls, sometimes more. I always talk to my husband for an hour, M-Th (business travel) and all my usage is included in my 2-3 days per charge. However, if I take lots of pictures or listen to music for lengthy sessions it drains more rapidly. Also, I like to play one game in particular every now and then which will drain my battery quicker. Incidentally, the screen is pretty decent and easy to see my game pieces (puzzle game).
Camera pictures are not as bad as some say with this 1.3mp camera. Probably best to set the resolution to its best quality, adjust the EF (brightness) as needed and use good lighting. I refer to use the menu settings often for the best possible photo. Granted, the camera is not the best there is but for this type of phone it seems about par and better than others in this entry level. I have taken very satisfactory shots when I take the time to make them right. Keep in mind this type of camera does not have a good sensor, so you cannot compare this to a quality digital camera. Some shots will amaze you while others will be disappointing. It goes with the territory.
My big gripe with this phone is the speaker sound... IMO, this is a fantastic 'texting' phone but it does fall short in sound quality. I find that I must use the wired headset or a bluetooth to hear my calls and be heard by others. The call volume sounds too low for me, even at its highest setting and the phone picks up a lot of background noises when on speakerphone, especially when driving. If you are sitting in a quiet spot, the speakerphone and call sound are normal, but only then.
Overall, I like this phone. The slider is decent and feels good. Full qwerty is easy to use and for me, very nice. Camera, MP3, video and other features of this phone are pleasing. I wish this model sported some form of a camera flash or flashlight, FM or WiFi, but it does not. I have partial web browsing plan and email and for me, this works well on this phone w/o issues.
My handset was purchased as a pay as you go phone and I was able to insert my SIM card and use it as my plan phone, too. If you are looking for an inexpensive, full Qwerty slider, this just might make you happy. I like having the camera and video options for times when needed. Try it out in the T-Mobile store demo to see of you’ll like it... |
| Comment #24 by: Courtney on 05 Jan 2010, 02:52 UTC | reply to this comment | Okay. For all those people saying how good it is when you only got it 4 hours ago or 2 days ago.. STOP!!!
All new phones are "SOOOO great"
Wait until you break it in. I've had mine for a year now.. It can't hold a charge. Mine lasts like... 5 hours. Not even texting. Sometimes it won't even charge all the way even though I'd have it on the charger all night. Mine is also starting to randomly shut off when I still have quite a bit of juice left.
And my keys are really starting to stick or not work I guess while I text.
I'm 15 and a big texter.
Poor phone.
Maybe 2/5..
I would NOT reccommend. |
| Comment #25 by: Alyssa on 14 Jan 2010, 03:46 UTC | reply to this comment | I thought this phone was really great when I first got it. I've had it for maybe a year or so now and I couldn't be less happy!
-Some of the keys stick and either don't work half the time or when I press them, multiple letters show up. For example, if I am typing the word "you" it will show up as "yo" or "youuuuu".
-It turns off on its own all the time, even if I have a full battery. It's mostly if I slide it open/closed or set it down (even setting it down gently triggers it to turn off) but sometimes it does it when it's just sitting on the desk next to me. I always have to keep pressing a button or something to make sure it's still on.
-The battery absolutely will not stay charged, no matter how long I charge it for.
-Sometimes it tells me I have full battery but I actually have none or next to none, and next thing I know my phone is dead and won't turn back on without being plugged in to the charger. |
| Comment #26 by: Keri on 03 Mar 2010, 15:57 UTC | reply to this comment | I have had this phone for 2 months now. I think the phone holds a pretty good charge. It is not a phone to do a lot of web browsing on, that WILL run the battery down. I haven't had issues with buttons sticking or anything like that. It may look like a nice phone, but all in all it is a basic phone. The set-up is very basic and it is a phone for people who simply want to text or call.
**The only issue I am starting to have is that it will turn off automatically. When I turn it back on my battery is still fully charged. From other reviews I have read it must happen a lot. If you are patient and pressing a button to turn your phone back on doesn't upset you I would definitely recommend this awesome text message phone. |
| Comment #27 by: Lem on 21 Mar 2010, 02:36 UTC | reply to this comment | The Samsung Gravity is a great phone in my opinion. I've had mine for about 9 months now and up until the signal got permanently damaged on my phone (for unknown reasons), it was very good. The battery held a good charge depending on how long I used the phone or had the screen on. I could leave it on for about three to four days consecutively without worrying about the battery dying on me. I'm not an avid texter, but I do send out texts daily and I play the games, check my email periodically throughout the day. To keep the battery from draining really quickly, I adjust the brightness to its lowest level. The screen visibility is still quite nice and honestly, as long as you have decent eyesight, you don't need the screen that bright. It's not like the screen is that dark at its lowest. Also, set the duration for the backlight to the least amount of time and it should be fine because that too drains the battery. The phone is slightly bulky, but for a candy bar phone with a qwerty keyboard, it's not too bad unless you have ultra tight and tiny pockets. The screen is a decent size and the camera takes okay quality photos. T-Mobile's signals aren't the best, but for a phone of its price, it's not that bad. Unfortunately, it does have its share of problems now that I've got a replacement for my Gravity. The one they sent me turns on and off at random times and I've read that it's to do with the battery. Not sure about what it is, but I've done the "stick a paper between the battery" thing and it seems okay for now. But like I said, its random and doesn't happen often. But we'll see. |
| Comment #28 by: amanda on 01 Apr 2010, 19:05 UTC | reply to this comment | Turn on the sound when you're trying to change the sound setting (can't be on vibrate or silent). It won't let you turn it off but you can change the sound it makes. |
| Comment #29 by: briana on 08 Apr 2010, 23:29 UTC | reply to this comment | okay so i have the samsung gravity 2 (it is the berry color) and i love this phone so much. the battery lasts pretty long and i dont no why people say it doesnt. i still have to charge my phone every night because i use it so much but some people use their phone more then others so of course the battery will die within hours. i love how i can charge my phone without it being off so i can still text. [: |
| Comment #30 by: Mccutheon on 13 May 2010, 21:05 UTC | reply to this comment | I've had this phone for about a year and a half. While the charge bar does go down rather quickly, it's not a great indicator of how much battery life is actually left. I've found it can function for a couple of hours on one bar. I charge it every couple of days and I'm on the phone a lot.
The problem I now have with this phone is that is just shuts off randomly from time to time. This just started a couple of months ago. There is no set reason that it does it. This is apparently a known issue as there is a whole thread dedicated to it on T-Mobiles website (google samsung gravity keeps shutting off, that's how I found this article)
Apparently, some people fix this by just sticking some paper behind the battery. I'm going to try that as I have 6 more months before I can upgrade it. |
| Comment #31 by: Dynae on 23 May 2010, 03:19 UTC | reply to this comment | I have this phone as well and i love it...for some reason today after recieving a picture message my phone shut off and everytime i try to turn it back off it shuts off again...Although i love the phone i cant stand these inconveniences... |
| Comment #32 by: Lorna on 09 Jun 2010, 22:12 UTC | reply to this comment | I've had the gravity for 11 months. At first I thought it was randomly turning off because all junk in my purse would somehow turn it off but now it's happening 3 - 4 times a day! I called TMo for a replacement. Surprise, my warranty is void because the 'battery indicator sticker' is no longer white. That means it has water damage. This phone is always in a purse, not in the rain, not by a shower never been submersed. I told the customer rep that obviously this is an issue with this phone. She said she has no information on this issue. So i would need to buy a new phone....Don't buy this phone!! |
| Comment #33 by: Jae on 28 Aug 2010, 00:01 UTC | reply to this comment | I cant browse on my phone. No place to put in the settings like the IPS,PORT.....I regret buying the phone |
| Comment #34 by: No more Samsung on 08 Oct 2011, 23:04 UTC | reply to this comment | This phone sucks... randomly shuts off at the most inconvenient time! Other than that it is a nice phone... this is the 3rd one with the same issue/complaint/problem. | |
