Last week, University of Washington (UW) Medicine started warning patients of the Harborview Medical Center and University of Washington Medical Center that their details might have been compromised after one of the organization’s employees opened an email attachment containing malware.

Around 90,000 people are said to be impacted by the data breach. The information includes names, medical record numbers, dates of service, dates of birth, social security or HIC (Medicare) numbers, and other data.

The FBI has been called in to investigate the incident. Meanwhile, UW Medicine has started taking steps to prevent future breaches.

Impacted patients are being contacted. ID Experts has been contracted and a call center has been set up. Those who have questions regarding the breach can contact ID Experts at the toll-free phone number 1-877-271-1533 (503-597-7682 for international callers).
