Microsoft informed of the availability of the second beta for the System Center Virtual Machine Manager since March 27, 2007. The Redmond Company has then stated that the next milestone of the System
Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 will be made available within 45 days from the initial announcement. And yesterday, Microsoft delivered on that promise as
SCVMM beta2 is ready for download.
For those of you who are not familiar with the product, System Center Virtual Machine Manager is designed to deliver centralized administration of virtual machine infrastructure. SCVMM "enables increased physical server utilization and rapid provisioning of new virtual machines by the administrator and authorized end users."
Users that have already had the chance to test-drive the beta 2 build, revealed that the version introduces a range of improvements over its predecessor. Although SCVMM beta 1 was a good release, the latest refresh brings to the table comprehensive improvements.
The new graphical user interface is among the features that have been revamped in the beta 2 release, delivering an experience similar to that of System Center Operations Manager 2007, Service Desk and System Center Essentials.
SCVMM beta 2 also includes support for Physical-to-Virtual (P2V), for Virtual-to-Virtual (V2V), 64-bit VMM server and PowerShell. Additionally, Microsoft has resolved minor issues with the beta 2 built and is also promising improved overall performance and scalability.
"For IT professionals responsible for managing virtual infrastructure, Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 — a member the System Center family of system management products — provides a straightforward and cost-effective solution for unified management of physical and virtual machines, consolidation of underutilized physical servers, and rapid provisioning of new virtual machines by leveraging the expertise and investments in Microsoft Windows Server technology," Microsoft informed.
