As it’s usually the case with the vast majority of its product releases, Microsoft is providing documentation for the recently launched upgrade to System Center Service Manager 2010. Last week, the Redmond company started offering System Center Service Manager 2010 Service Pack 1 to customers, accompanying the download with product documentation.

The System Center Service Manager 2010 SP1 Product Documentation is live on the Microsoft Download Center and can be grabbed free of charge, just as the service pack.

There are no less than seven documents available for download, including: SM_AdminGuide.docx, SM_AuthoringGuide.docx, SM_DeploymentGuide.docx, SM_DisasterRecoveryGuide.docx, SM_OperationsGuide.docx, SM_PlanningGuide.docx, and SM_UpgradeSP1.docx and SM_job_aids.zip.

As you can see, one of the resources offered by the software giant deals with helping customers make the jump from the RTM version of SCSM to SP1.

“You can upgrade System Center Service Manager 2010 (version 7.0.5826.x) to System Center Service Manager 2010 SP1 (version 7.0.6555.x).

“We recommend that you test this upgrade in a lab environment before attempting to upgrade any installation in a production environment,” the company revealed.

The guide in question helps IT professionals prepare the environment for the upgrade, but also perform the transition.

In the eventuality that the upgrade fails, IT pros can also access information on to troubleshoot problems.

According to the information supplied by Microsoft, the upgrade from RTM to SP1 must be performed in a specific order.

“1. Start with the data warehouse management server. Your System Center Service Manager 2010 management servers can work with the System Center Service Manager 2010 SP1 version of your data warehouse management server.

2. After the upgrade to the data warehouse management server has been completed, upgrade the initial Service Manager management server. If you created more than one Service Manager management server, the initial Service Manager management server would have been the first one that you created.

3.Upgrade the Service Manager consoles, any additional Service Manager management servers, and the Self-Service Portal,” the Redmond company stated.
