Need a tad of help analyzing a SQL Server environment? The Microsoft System Center Advisor might be the solution you’re looking for. System Center Advisor is designed to enable customers to perform assessments of their SQL Server configurations, and get an overview of historical data as well as the evolution of deployments.

The hope is that customers with SQL Server deployments will be able to cut down the amount of downtime and resolve any issues as fast as possible.

According to Microsoft, the System Center Advisor agent analyzer is set up to play nice with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of SQL Server 2008 and later as well as Windows Server 2008 or later.

“Advisor collects data from your installations, analyzes it, and generates alerts that identify potential issues (such as missing security patches) or deviations from identified best practices with regard to configuration and usage,” Microsoft stated.

“Advisor also provides both current and historical views of the configuration of servers in your environment.”

As customers who visit the System Center Advisor website can tell, the online service is available in Release Candidate (RC) stage at this point in time.

In this regard, the workloads analyzed involve only: Active Directory, Hyper-V Host and the general Windows Server 2008 and later platform, as well as the SQL engine.

“Advisor is developed by the Microsoft System Center Advisor product group in partnership with Microsoft Support engineers to ensure that the issues customers report to Microsoft are detected before they affect your environment,” Microsoft added.

“Advisor is regularly updated to reflect the most recent experiences of these engineers, who support customers around the world.”
