A few days ago, experts warned that a possible military attack by Western countries against Syria might lead to cyberattacks being launched by hackers that support the Assad regime.

The first name that came to everyone’s mind was the one of the Syrian Electronic Army. These hacktivists haven’t demonstrated too much sophistication (they mostly rely on spear phishing).

However, most of their attacks against high-profile organizations have been rather successful.

On the other hand, experts warn that the Syrian Electronic Army isn’t the only hacker group supporting the Assad regime.

While analyzing hacked servers abused by spammers, Cloudmark researchers have come across another pro-Syria hacker group: SeCuR!TY LiONS HaCK3RS.

SeCuR!TY LiONS HaCK3RS have defaced a large number of websites with pro-Assad messages.

Cloudmark Research Analyst Andrew Conway highlights the fact that there’s not much the US can do to these Syrian hackers. However, other anti-US hacktivists might not be so lucky.

For instance, a hacker that uses the online moniker R3d ErRor, who enjoys defacing websites with burning flags of the US and Israel, writes on a forum that he is a blackhat from Iran.

However, he claims he lives in Washington, which puts him right on NSA’s radar.
