Synology has just announced that is has expanded its NAS portfolio with the addition of a new solution, the DS212j, which was designed to be used as a personal cloud storage device courtesy of a range of apps designed for iPhone, iPad and Android.

Those apps allow users to access the data they have stored on the DS212j, including documents, music, video and photos, as well as to receive live streaming video from home surveillance webcams.

The device itself can accommodate two 3.5-inch storage drives and comes with a new milk white chassis that adds a dash of style to Synology's NAS.

Things have also changed on the inside of the DS212j, as the 1.2GHz processor and 256MB of RAM are now cooled by a larger 92mm fan which enhances heat dissipation while also minimizing the noise produced while running to 18.3 dB(A).

Power consumption is estimated at 17.6W in operation and 5.5W in hibernation, making the new NAS up to 45% more power efficient than its predecessor.

As far as connectivity is concerned, the DS212j comes equipped with one Gigabit LAN port and two USB connectors.

"The DS212j is designed to work seamlessly with iPhone, iPad and Android phones, letting users to stay in touch with their stored digital content on-the-go," said Darren Lin, product manager of Synology Inc.

“Synology offers various mobile apps that allow users to access to data, view photos, stream music and videos and even view live feeds from IP cameras on-the-roam.

"Thanks to DS212j's ability to add terabytes for our mobile needs, our tablet and smartphones storage limitations are now gone," added Lin.

Synology DS212j is now shipping globally and its UK price has been set at £162, which translates into $258 US or 189 EUR.
