The 5 TB and 4 TB models, as well as the 3 TB and 2 TB ones, have been added as well

The WD Red hard disk drive units from Western Digital are a potential godsend for users of small network-attached storage devices, but the sad fact is that most NAS units can't handle more than 4 TB.

Synology decided not to let this situation stand for long, so it added support for the WD Red and WD Red Pro 3.5-inch NAS HDDs. All the HDDs, from the 2 TB to the 6 TB.

The full list is as follows: WD60EFRX (6 TB), WD50EFRX (5 TB), WD4001FFSX (4 TB), WD3001FFSX (3 TB), WD2001FFSX (2 TB).

However, only some Synology DiskStations and RackStations from the x10 through x15 series possess this compatibility. You will have to look at the HDD support documents before placing an order, just to be sure of what you're getting.

Fortunately for you, Synology took the liberty of putting together a full compatibility list, which you can find here.

The best of the WD Red-ready NAS units can have up to 8 bays, while the ones with Red Pro support can combine up to 16. This makes the potential capacity of your little, hidden home server truly gargantuan.

It's a shame that each 6TB HDD costs so much, although we suppose it's still leagues below what SSDs would demand: $299 / €299.
