The ever-increasing amount of data floating around home and office networks is starting to make NAS (network-attach storage) units a lot more popular for backup purposes, and for this reason, Synology, a very well-known name in this segment, has just released the DiskStation DS111 and DS211 models, two storage solutions designed specifically for the office and workgroup environments. The two NAS units can provide up to 2TB (the DS111) and up to 4TB (the DS211) of storage, supporting the addition of 3.5" SATA HDDs or 2.5-inch SATA HDDs/SSDs, while being powered by an 1.6-Ghz processor. Of course, the level of performance reached by these storage solutions matches the needs of the specific segments they target, the Synology DS211 delivering an average 104.37 MB/sec reading speed under RAID 1 configuration in a Windows environment, and 53.29 MB/sec writing, while the Synology DS111 delivers an average 105.59 MB/sec reading speed and 60.71 MB/sec writing. The new DiskStations provide a reliable solution for the standard NAS roles such as easy file sharing, scheduled backups, and remote access. Additional services can also be enabled, such as a built-in web server capable of hosting up to 30 sites at once, or an add-on email server. Moreover, remote access has been further enhanced with apps available for Android and iPhone smart phone platforms, which means that users will easily be able to access their data from their mobile handsets as well. "DSM 3.0 already offers a solid list of features businesses need and want," said Jason Bonoan, a marketing specialist at Synology America. "These two latest additions to the DiskStation family really offer a high-performing platform to run them on, and at an attractive price-point," Mr. Bonoan added. Unfortunately, Synology has not provided any pricing details related to its latest NAS units, but if you want to find out more on this topic, you can contact the company directly.
