SyncToy is a Microsoft PowerToy, designed with Windows Vista and Windows XP in mind. But at the same time, the latest version of the tool available as a free download is not limited to just Vista and XP. Todd Headrick, the product planner for the Microsoft Windows Home Server, revealed that Synctoy 2.0 Beta can just as well be used with the company's new server operating system, for home networks.

"You can use SyncToy to synchronize folders between your home computers and your Windows Home Server. I use SyncToy to synchronize my photos, music and recorded TV between my laptop and my home server, so that I always have local copies of my stuff when I take my laptop on the road. SyncToy enables you to create multiple folder pairs that you can keep synchronized," Headrick revealed.

At the end of 2006, Microsoft updated SyncToy, in order to integrate Windows Vista. SyncToy 2.0 Beta, released by the end of October, brings to the table a plethora of improvements, including support for 64-bit, automatic and dynamic drive letter reassignment, synchronization of all folder actions, from creation to delete. On top of this, the PowerToy also offers advanced filtering capabilities, extension of the command line management capabilities, as well as the enhancing of the sync engine.

"SyncToy enables you to setup multiple options for each folder pair, with the key options being the main SyncToy action: Synchronize - New and updated files are copied both ways. Renames and deletes on either side are repeated on the other. Echo - New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames and deletes on the left are repeated on the right. Contribute - New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames on the left are repeated on the right. No deletions," Headrick added.
