According to study carried out by Canalys, Symbian has a market share that exceeds any previous results.
Overall, the market of operating systems and smartphones has doubled, the studies indicating that in the first three months of this year, 10.7 million devices from this category have been distributed and retailed. This increase is significant considering that last year, in the same period, the figures were
pointing out only 5.9 million phones.
Symbian's market share has increased to 61.4%, a real boost compared to the 40.5% from the last study. In the first quarter, 6.6 million devices having such an operating system have been distributed. Symbian's success means a decrease for the competitors: Microsoft and PalmSource. The first company lost 5%, falling behind the 20% threshold, while the latter had to settle with only 10.5%.
BlackBerry is on the fourth position with 758,000 units, which means 7% of the market. However, once with launching of the RIM devices on the Central and Eastern Europe, it is expected an increase of the number of sold devices.
PalmSource's problems in finalizing and promoting the Treo 650 justify the low market share of the company in this domain.
Canalys announces that among the producers promoting Symbian, Nokia is the most active on the market, the company being responsible for the commercializing of 82% of the total number of terminals incorporating such an operating system.
