The Symbian Foundation, together with Monotype Imaging Holdings Inc., a member of the foundation and one of the most renowned text imaging-solution providers, has recently announced the official launch of the first open source font available for the Symbian platform. Monotype Yuppy, also known as the MYuppy Chinese font, will prove to be a very helpful tool, especially for manufacturers and developers aiming for the Chinese mobile-phone market, one of the largest in the world. MYuppy is now available, fully customizable, and can be downloaded from the developer's site.

MYuppy has been customized to perform on high-quality mobile displays, offering an entirely new interface design, with a customer-oriented look characterized by its easy-to-read lines and fresh design. This software was mainly targeted at the OEMs and application developers looking to enter the Chinese mobile markets.

"Open-sourcing a production-quality Chinese font is a significant step for Symbian and the success of its community in China. Symbian currently holds a dominant position in China’s smartphone market, with our market share standing at 70 percent in Q1 2010, as reported by In-Stat China, but we are always looking to improve the offering for the 780 million users in China’s mobile market," Lee M. Williams, executive director of Symbian, said. "By contributing an eye-catching font that can be used by all for free and customised easily, Monotype Imaging is going the extra mile to support Symbian and our community in achieving our goals in China."

MYuppy is fully customizable, giving application developers the option to use it in various applications. Being an open source font, MYuppy can also be transformed into a wide array of different ones and, under the Eclipse Public License terms, contributed back to the Symbian platform. This feature allows the creation of multiple Chinese-based fonts, which can be later employed in various industries such as application development, mobile-phone manufacturing or any other type of industry. As an open source font, MYuppy can be used for free in numerous domains including software programs, artwork, graphics, and many more.
