The Symbian Foundation has just announced the release of the first PDK (Product Development Kit) based on Symbian^3 (S^3) since it was announced as being Functionally Complete (FC) milestone about three weeks ago, namely PDK 3.0.0. The solution comes with a full build of the Symbian^3 platform, as well as with the corresponding source code.

According to the Foundation, the PDK should offer developers the possibility to access the S^3 feature set, while being meant to enable means for the community to engage with the development team on the loading of the operating system on mobile phones. Those interested in learning more on the new release, as well as to take a look at the platform, should head to the Symbian Foundation's website here.

“S^3 represents a major step forward in the Symbian platform, providing a greatly improved user experience, multiple personalized homescreens, an exciting and advanced multimedia experience including HDMI support, the introduction of Next Generation Graphics, better data networking and much, much more! Symbian also commissioned a great new theme for the S^3 platform called “Fresh” which is included for the first time in this PDK,” Mark Skrebels, Release Council Chair and Senior Release Manager at Symbian, announced via a post on the Symbian blog.

He also iterated the fact that the functionally complete milestone announced for S^3 was the first one to be announced for a fully open-sourced Symbian release. Moreover, this is seen as the transition of the platform from the largely feature submission and stabilization stage into the “hardening phase.” The newly released PDK 3.0.0 includes support for a full UI ROM executing on ARMv5 platforms.

“A great opportunity to get direct experience with S^3, and learn together with others from the community, is to join the Bug Squad team on Monday 12th July which will be hosting a “hands on” IRC session. For more information, please visit the Bug Squad pages,” Mark Skrebels continues. The Symbian^3 PDK 3.0.0 is available for download from here (registration required).
