And the VB100 number 30

There has been little ink shed over the security that Symantec offers for Windows Vista. Therefore, the fact that Symantec Antivirus for Windows Vista has received the VB100 award from Virus Bulletin passed almost unnoticed. Dave Cole, director of Symantec Security Response celebrated the fact that Symantec Security Response has hit the Big 3-0!

The Big 3-0 actually means that the Symantec Security Response has managed to collect no less than 30 VB100 awards in a row, an impressive task. The last award certifies the fact that Symantec is ready to deliver top-end protection for Windows Vista.

"This means that for every VB100 test for which we have submitted a product, we've detected all the threats on the latest WildList without missing a threat and without triggering a false positive on a clean file. There were a couple other notable items in the latest test, not the least of which was that it was the first VB100 that covered Microsoft's new Vista operating system. We were one of several security companies who notched a win on the inaugural Vista VB100," Cole noted.

Symantec's immaculate history with the VB100 test goes back all the way to the last century, as Cole put it, which actually means just 1999. Then Symantec's security for Windows 98 had been tested with success. By comparison, Microsoft itself failed the test, because OneCare did not identify one piece of the malware properly.

"There has been a lot of work going on over here at Symantec to support Microsoft's latest technologies such as Vista and Office 2007. In fact, we recently rolled out support for the new Office 12 file formats in our engine to prepare for a potential new series of threats using Office 2007 files. Alongside recently unveiling our new anti-keylogger and Trojan heuristics engine (named SONAR), things have been busy around here lately," Cole concluded.
