A recently leaked document claiming to be the official synopsis for the upcoming Rambo film said something about one of the most legendary fighters / heroes in cinematography going against a “monster” and “abomination” of some kind. This, together with a rumor that “Rambo V” would steer in the direction of Jean Claude Van Damme’s “Universal Soldier,” prompted Stallone himself to explain the details of the plot.

The actor, director and screenwriter for the fifth installment in the franchise, rang up Harry from Ain’t It Cool News to clarify some of the things that were being circulated in the media as regarded the plot, Times Online says. So, in a lengthy, voice-mail message (which you can listen to here), the veteran star explains how his character, John Rambo, will not go against a regiment of killer soldiers in the manner of “Universal Soldiers,” as rumor had it, but only against one – presumably the “monster” we were also telling you about yesterday.

“Having fought with escalating body counts the US National Guard, the Vietnamese Army, the Soviet army and it appears the entire population of Burma, where can the character of ex Green Beret killing machine John Rambo go? Back to his roots it seems: Jettisoning a previous plan to have Rambo address the very real problem of human trafficking across the Mexican border Stallone is now apparently planning to set his military superman on the trail of a younger version of himself.” Times Online writes.

Stallone himself says in the message that the danger Rambo will be facing in the upcoming film, which is yet in the early stages of development, is the biggest of them all, because he will not be fighting something he actually has a chance against, but his biggest enemy: a raging, uncontrollable and unstoppable version of himself. In this sense, the film will, indeed, mark a departure from the franchise so far, just like Stallone promised fans it would a while back.

However, since the project is still in pre-production stages, even the details that Stallone has just provided are subject to change. Fans of the Rambo franchise are, though, a bit more calm now that they know their hero will not “sell out” and head into an entirely different direction, as they initially believed when the aforementioned synopsis surfaced on the Internet.
