The nominations for the Brit Awards 2010, scheduled to take place on February 10, have just been announced and, while it’s clear that the ladies are leading the pack in terms of the most nods, one singer is clearly absent from all categories: Susan Boyle. The Scottish singer, who had the best selling album of last year internationally, has not been included in any category in the awards ceremony, be it small or major, as
The Sun can confirm.
We were
also telling you the other day that Susan Boyle
might be overlooked by the Brit Awards on two supposed reasons: that she stood for manufactured pop music, given the fact she owed her fame to X Factor, and that she was too “uncool” to even be considered for a nomination. Now that the noms have been made public, some see this as confirmation that at least one of these two was true, though which one that could be no one can tell right now.
“[H]ow can SuBo – who had the biggest selling album in the UK and US last year – not be nominated for Best Female? She must have been considered too uncool. The Best Female Category contains five worthy contenders. But I’d expect to see SuBo, Chery Cole or Alexandra Burke on the list ahead of Bat for Lashes – as brilliant as she is. It shows how much the Brits’ voting academy – made up of 1,000 music industry figures –
dislike Simon Cowell. I’m surprised Leona Lewis and JLS feature on the list at all,” The Sun writes, hinting that both reasons might have worked against Susan.
Ged Doherty, chairman of the Brit Awards and also head of Boyle’s record label Sony, is also outraged about the omission, saying this is the clearest case of holding a grudge. The worst part is that, by acting this way, the academy is single-handedly ruining its own reputation, while also taking something from a singer that deserves better than to be treated this way. Susan should have gotten at least a nod in the Best Album category, he believes. “I think it’s a crime. I can’t explain it. Every year there is something the academy gets wrong and this year they got that wrong,” Doherty tells the British media.
