The Wildlife Conservation Society says that, according to the findings of a recent statewide independent survey, quite a lot of people who currently live in New York, US, are in favor of a permanent state ban on ivory sales.

More precisely, the organization claims that, after carrying out a telephone survey of as many as 600 registered voters in the state of New York, it has found that over 80% of the voters in this part of the US would support a state ban on selling items made from ivory.

The Wildlife Conservation Society maintains that support for this ban has been documented and has been proven to be strong across all demographic groups.

Besides, it argues that those who are in favor on such an initiative do not care all that much about how the ban would affect auction houses and antique dealers.

“This survey clearly shows that New York Voters recognize that 96 elephants a day are being slaughtered, and that to get the world to take notice and save this iconic animal, New York needs to enact a ban,” John Calvelli with the organization says in a statement.

“People understand how much elephants need our help, and New York is ready to take a much-needed step,” adds Beth Allgood with the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
