It appears the Dell ActiveStylus isn’t the only smart pen to be having issues

Here’s something we didn't expect. Most of you might be aware of Dell’s Active Stylus problems experienced by Venue 8 Pro and Venue 11 Pro users.

So far, we had recommended perspective customers to takes some time to think before buying one of the Venue Pro models, especially if they were doing so, thinking they will be using the pen a lot.

We also pointed towards the direction of an alternative, the new ASUS VivoTab Note 8 which also comes bundling a stylus (Wacom origin). A hands-on with the tablet convinced us that the pen worked really well with the slate, so it could prove to be a suitable option.

Apparently, we spoke too soon. Users on the TabletPCReview forum are complaining their ASUS VivoTab Note 8 has stopped working. User graki explains.

“I was enjoying my Note 8, sketching and handwriting a lot since I received it last week, and suddenly the tablet stopped to register anything from the pen (touch is still fine). I tried, but to no avail:”

“- installing/removing Wacom FeelIT driver - ‘refreshing’ the whole windows 8 to factory defaults”

“In the device manager there is an exclamation mark on what should be the pen device entry point ("HID I2C Device" without FeelIT, and "Wacom Device" with it). The property of the device state gives a Code 10 and a "A request for the HID descriptor failed.”

Some users have contacted ASUS and received an firmware update for the Wacom stylus that didn't really prove to be effective, after all.

“I´ve got the same Problem here since a week. I´m standing in contact to Asus support. They gave me a firmware update for the Wacom, and then there were no problems for one and a half day, but in this morning the pen didn´t work again.. I hope there will be a solution on Monday,” says Stroh Mr. Plow.

Alexb2611 says he has tried another solution, sadly without getting any results.

“Last night I refreshed to stock and didn't apply any updates, to see if the problem was being caused by a recent update conflicting somehow. The pen input stopped working while I was using it, about 5 minutes after finishing the system refresh.”

There are multiple theories about what might be causing this, including hardware or driver issues. So far ASUS representatives haven’t said anything about the issues, so we have no idea if the problem could be fixed with a driver update and not.

We hope ASUS won’t end up like Dell, having to withdraw the pens and provide replacements months later. Are you having problems with your VivoTab Note 8?
