Cheryl Cole is the kind of woman that men love to look at and women aspire to look like. Millions of ladies from around the world look up to her and try to emulate her: from her impeccable fashion style, her enviably thin yet fit frame, her gorgeous hair and killer legs, and, last but not least, her dimples. Plastic surgeons in the UK report an almost worrying increase in the number of inquiries for what is known as “designer dimples,” the Daily Mail informs.

Designer dimples are dimples in the cheeks created surgically, just like Cheryl makes when she smiles. The difference between hers and the other type (other that one is natural and the other surgically possible), is that designer dimples remain visible even when one is not smiling. Moreover, though they may seem like a lovely (and certainly fashionable) option right now, getting them is rather risky because the long-term effects of the intervention are yet to be determined.

“Experts are less than enthusiastic about the procedure, warning that its long-term effects are unknown. The dimples will also not look entirely natural, as they remain permanently rather than appearing only when you grin. The operation, dimpleplasty, involves making a tiny cut in the skin to create a small depression. A stitch is then used to tack the underside of the skin down to a deeper layer and hold it in place. Once the suture dissolves, permanent scar tissue will remain to maintain the dimple,” the Mail writes of the procedure.

“There is a worrying rise in demand for ‘designer dimples’ as women go to ever extreme lengths to look like their favorite celebrities, including Cheryl Cole. The growing phenomenon has hit UK shores after a rapid rise in popularity in America. However, designer dimples are akin to permanent scarring and could turn to designer disasters as the face begins to droop with age,” a spokesperson for plastic surgery firm SurgiCare writes of the dangers that come with dimpleplasty.

A boost in the number of enquiries for dimples in other parts of the body as well has also been registered, the British publication goes on to say. Speaking strictly of dimples, 88 percent of requests have come from those looking to create them on their face. A smaller 10 percent came in the form of requests for a chin cleft, while 2 percent of women also asked about the possibility of recreating dimples on their lower back that have disappeared with weight gain.
